PNP Hopes Mayor Duterte Will Fulfill His Promise to Increase Their Wages

The Philippine National Police (PNP) members hopes that Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of Davao City will fulfill his promise to increase the wages of the members of the police force in the country.

According to previous reports, the Duterte-Cayetano tandem promised increase the minimum wage of PNP members by a sum which is 5 times the current monthly wages and more than what the PNP chief currently earns.

Mayor Duterte promised to improve the justice system of the Philippines and not resort to extrajudicial killing and one way of doing such plan is to increase the salaries of policemen. The Davao City Mayor and the presumptive president wanted to increase the salaries of policemen to P75,000 to P100,000 each within three years of the Duterte presidency.

The P75,000-P100,000 ($1,600-$2,100) proposed salary is a huge sum compared to what police officers earn these days. Based upon the current compensation scheme for uniformed personnel, the lowest rankof Police Officer (PO1) earns only P14,834 ($315) in monthly base pay. The lowest sum promised by Duterte and Cayetano, P75,000, is 5 times that amount.

Once Mayor Duterte fulfill his promised to the PNP, the police officers nationwide would earn more than what the chief of the PNP is earning today. According to some official reports from the PNP, a Police Director General - the rank of the PNP chief - currently earns only P67,500 ($1,400) a month.
