Soledad Duterte: Know More About the Mother of Mayor Rody Duterte

The mother of the presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte, Soledad Roa Duterte or more popularly known as Nanay Soling in Davao City, has become so popular in the city because of her legendary achievement when it comes to social and economic upliftment of the people. During her early days in Davao, she was considered as a human dynamo with varied social welfare involvements.

Standing no more than 5 feet, and 2 inches tall of slight build and fragile looking Filipina, Soledad Duterte is a well-known figure in Davao City being the widow of the late Vicente Duterte, the provincial Governor of Davao from 1959 to 1965, during this time the Davao Region is under the Province of Davao.

Mrs. Soledad Duterte was born on November 14, 1916 in Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte to Eleno Roa and Fortunata Gonzales. She finished her Elementary and Secondary education in her native town. Nanay Soling pursued her college education at the Philippine Normal School in Manila in 1939. She was connected with the Bureau of Public Schools as a teacher when she met and married lawyer Vicente Duterte of Cebu.

The family of Vicente Duterte and Soledad Duterte came to Davao in the year 1951, as lawyer Atty. Vicente Duterte engaged in private-practice while Soledad served as teacher teaching in the public school of Davao. Aling Soling retired as a public school supervisor in 1952 when her lawyer-husband joined politics and became the governor of Davao.

Aling Soling became familiar with the social and economic problems of the people during the time when her husband Vicente became the governor of the province of Davao as she involved in various activities of the out-of-school youth, women, children and the disabled.

The father of Mayor Rody Duterte, Governor Duterte died in February 1968 but her mother, Soledad or Aling Soling continued her involvement in social and civic activities. During that time she has proven that one can serve the community efficiently and faithfully without necessarily occupying an elective office.

Some of the most noble achievements of Mrs. Duterte is her involvement in several uplift programs for Aetas and Bagobos, and thinks nothing less of climbing mountain trails to reach them. One of her favorite projects, are the current relocation endeavors for fire victims and the development of the Badjao community.

Aling Soling Duterte also believes that the only way to achieve economic stability is to make every Filipino self-sufficient in food - for a family to have a piece of land to till and provide food and housing.
