Globe Telecom's P5 per Call on 911 Hotline Irks Netizens
The announcement of Globe Telecom, one of the largest telecommunications network in the Philippines for charging an additional P5 per call for their subscribers calling one of Pres. Duterte's landmark achievement, the 911 hotline.
Netizens were quick to share their dismay on the announcement of Globe on their planned charging of every 911 hotline calls.
Some netizens posted on Facebook that Globe should support the plans of the Duterte administration of providing free access to the world-renowned emergency number.
Globe Telecom announced on Wednesday that they will charge an additional P5 per call for their subscribers calling the 911 hotline.
The administration of President Rody Duterte already announced to the media that the Hotline 911 and the Complaint Hotline 8888 will be made available to the Filipino public starting on Monday, August 1, 2016.
According to Globe General Counsel Froilan Castelo in a statement released to the press, he noted that charging 911 calls is suggested by the government to discourage prank calls.
Globe released the following statement:
"We would also like to inform our customers that those calling the hotlines will incur regular voice charges plus an additional P5/call for those calling the 911 hotline," said Castelo.
Castelo noted that Globe is ready to transmit voice calls for emergency hotline 911 and complaint hotline 8888 starting August 1 "as directed by the government."
"We are also expediting migration of our system to immediately enable transmission of SMS or text messages thru 8888 and we are confident that we will be able to achieve this target within the timeframe of 30-45 days given to us by the government," he said.
